Abstract: The 9th German-Yugoslav Meeting on Materials Science and Development was held inHirsau from April 16 to 19th, 1989 within the Governmental Agreement on Cultural andScientific Cooperation of 1969 between the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslaviaand the Federal Republic of Germany. In this frame several Agreements had been signedfrom mid to late seventies, i.e. the agreement between the Federal Administration forInternational Scientific, Educational, Cultural and Technical Cooperation (YUZAMS) inBelgrade and the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT) in Bonn. Withinthis legal structure nine meetings on materials science and development have been heldsince April, 1975 to discuss scientific results of on-going bilateral cooperation projects inthis area, and to pinpoint possible new areas of interest for future cooperation. Theconcentrated efforts in this discipline have made materials science one of the main pillarsof German-Yugoslav bilateral cooperation. Organizers and participants are weil aware thatmaterials science is a key discipline for supporting developments in technologically-appliedfields. These developments span the range from the design of novel materials withascribed or defined properties for new applications (e.g. in computer engineering) on theone hand, to the fruitful impetus in traditional fields of research and development, on theother hand. The bilateral German-Yugoslav Cooperation has resulted in a considerablenumber of dose contacts between research institut ions and researchers in both countries. These contacts are also expected to serve as fruitful nudei for multinational cooperationin programs of the European Community. The 9th meeting in Hirsau had 43 participants in order to maintain the familiaratmosphere of a meeting in a workshop style which has proven successful for theYugoslav-German Cooperation in the past. Two types of presentations, 15 or 30 min inlength, were given. The shorter presentation was used mainly to re port progress ofon-going projects which were in an initial or intermediate stage of progress. In thelonger type of presentations a number of review papers were given on subjects that havea direct impact on present and future projects. They were intended to provide a criticalplenary introduction for the subsequent discussion, e.g. the future use of structuralceramics in the automotive industry. Longer presentations were also made on cooperationprojects which have entered a final stage.
